41. Operation Stand Down Huntsville, AL 911 !

UPDATE: See Second Annual OSD Huntsville October 2008 Update. Volunteers Needed!

While In Nashville, TN at the OSD I ran into a critical situation. I met a very nice and sincere lady named Sandra Childress who is the Secretary/Treasurer of Operation Standown for Huntsville, Alabama. They are holding a 3 day OSD from November 2nd through 4th, 2007 at Joe Davis Stadium at Huntsville, Alabama.

As of Friday the 12th of October they had received their $7,500.00 Help America Grant for a three day event, $1,000.00 grant from OSD Nashville (which went quickly said Sandra as she explained they have been planning this since March 2007) and have been raising money from other fund raisers like car washes. As we know it is a lot of work to raise money and she has only 8 people working with her and some family and friends. She has been one busy woman. LTC. ret Bill Burleigh of the Nashville OSD has been giving her pointers, but he has his own operations I observed and is very busy himself.

American Legion Post 237 has loaned them a room to meet in once a week. Unfortunately, the American Legion’s, VFW’s, DAV’s, AMVET’s of the Huntsville areas have already committed their charity funds elsewhere for 2007 and were unable to financially assist Operation Stand Down Huntsville this year. There are approximately 450 homeless veterans in the greater Huntsville area. This is the first year there has ever been an OSD.

Sandra admits the task is going to be overwhelming as she still needs help with Vetpacks. She is very short in this area. Actually, I have seen these events are very labor intensive, with TRUE volunteers being very tired at the end of the day. Fortunately she has Native Pride Security that donated the security services as the Huntsville Police, National Guard nor anyone else would not assist with it. Native Pride Security is also assisting in raising funds with Sandra. Monetary donations are sorely needed. And we all know that full time workers with the homeless are under paid or non paid and overworked. Monetary donations may be sent to:
Native Pride Security or email her at bsjennings@bellsouth.net
50 Timber Gap Circle
Hartselle, AL 35640

Whatever help you can give them is so very appreciated that you will never be able to fathom it. My heart goes out to OSD Huntsville.

I was thePlt Sgt of Alabamian, Solomon Smith, in Vietnam. Searching for him for several yrs. Mr Smith is an African American, and would be in his late 50s or early 60s. Don’t know if he is homeless but if you have record of him being so, I will be able to help him. Solomon has a Plt of 40 “Brothers” who are waiting to see him again and he will have all the support he needs. Please let me know if you have any info on a Solomon Smith. Thank you. John J Weiss, US Army Retired
